Cone Health has filed a certificate of need (CON) application to build a new full-service hospital in Mebane, North Carolina, seeking approval for 46 acute care beds allocated to Alamance County.
The proposed facility, Cone Health Mebane Hospital, would be located adjacent to the existing Cone Health MedCenter Mebane. The Greensboro-based health system estimates the project will cost up to $275 million and span 161,578 square feet.
If approved, the hospital would include 15 emergency department bays, three general operating rooms, one C-section suite, two procedure rooms, and three labor and delivery beds. Plans also call for seven observation beds, imaging, and other ancillary and support services.

Cone Health officials say the new facility would expand access to care in eastern Alamance County, reducing the need for residents to travel to the Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington or other facilities along the I-40/85 corridor.
“Cone Health has successfully helped meet the health care needs of eastern Alamance County close to home for more than a dozen years,” said president and CEO Dr. Mary Jo Cagle in a statement. “This major investment positions Cone Health Mebane Hospital to become a significant part of this community for decades to come.”
Pending regulatory approval, construction is expected to be completed by 2028, with the hospital opening in 2029.
