Eli Lilly and Company announced plans to significantly expand its pharmaceutical manufacturing footprint in the United States, committing to more than $50 billion in capital investments since 2020.

The Indianapolis-based company intends to build four additional manufacturing sites this year, creating thousands of jobs and strengthening its domestic supply chain.

Three of the new facilities will focus on active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production, supporting small molecule chemical synthesis and reshoring critical manufacturing capabilities. The fourth site will expand Lilly’s global parenteral manufacturing network, which produces injectable therapies.

"Lilly's optimism about the potential of our pipeline across therapeutic areas — cardiometabolic health, oncology, immunology and neuroscience — drives our unprecedented commitment to our domestic manufacturing build-out," said David A. Ricks, Lilly chair and CEO. "Our confidence positions us to help reinvigorate domestic manufacturing, which will benefit hard-working American families and increase exports of medicines made in the USA."

The expansion is expected to generate more than 3,000 permanent jobs for highly skilled workers, including engineers, scientists, and lab technicians. Additionally, the company anticipates creating nearly 10,000 construction jobs during the development phase.

"To deliver on our big bets on next-generation modalities like small molecules, biologics and nucleic acid therapies, Lilly is investing in the state-of-the-art manufacturing infrastructure needed to deliver tomorrow's safe and reliable medicines," said Edgardo Hernandez, executive vice president and president of Lilly Manufacturing Operations.

Beyond job creation, the company projects that the new facilities will contribute to economic growth in their respective communities through increased local spending, tax revenue, and workforce development opportunities.

Lilly is currently in discussions with multiple states regarding potential locations for the new sites, with final selections expected later this year. The company anticipates that the facilities will be operational within five years.
