Massachusetts General Hospital has announced a $100 million donation from entrepreneur and philanthropist Herb Chambers, which will fund the development of the Herb Chambers Tower, a state-of-the-art facility designed to enhance cancer care, research, and patient support.

The nearly 1 million-square-foot building, set for completion in 2027, will be part of the Phillip and Susan Ragon Building. The facility aims to streamline the cancer treatment process by housing consultations, imaging, labs, procedures, infusion services, and inpatient care under one roof. It will also include spaces dedicated to family support and patient-centered innovations, as well as an 8,000-square-foot rooftop garden with views of Beacon Hill.

“This incredibly generous gift will enhance collaboration and transform the way our exceptional clinical teams deliver cutting-edge, research-infused care,” said Dr. David F. M. Brown, president of academic medical centers at Mass General Brigham.

Chambers, a Dorchester native, shared the personal significance of the donation, reflecting on the care his family and friends have received at MGH. “My motivation in extending this gift is that the Herb Chambers Tower will shine as a beacon of hope for everyone touched by this awful disease,” he said.

The tower will include 228 acute care inpatient beds, 32 intensive care unit beds, and a new Center for Urgent Cancer Care providing 24/7 specialized treatment. Designed with input from patients, families, and caregivers, the facility reflects a commitment to innovation and health equity.

Chambers, a U.S. Navy veteran and prominent Boston businessman, is known for his philanthropy across healthcare and community initiatives.
