Varian’s RapidArc Dynamic gains FDA clearance, promises efficiency in radiation therapy

January 06, 2025
Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, has received FDA clearance for RapidArc Dynamic, a tool designed to enhance treatment planning and delivery in radiation therapy.

The solution integrates algorithms capable of optimizing treatment plans and calculating radiation doses up to 70% faster. Early reports suggest that it could reduce radiation dose exposure to organs at risk by as much as 50%, potentially minimizing side effects for patients.

“RapidArc Dynamic is the latest example of Varian’s sustained investment in innovation and ushers in a radical transformation in radiotherapy planning and delivery designed to bring flexibility to care teams using arc therapy,” said Sasa Mutic, Ph.D., president of radiation oncology solutions at Varian.

The technology includes several advancements, such as a dynamic collimator that allows real-time adjustments during treatment, enhancing control and dose precision. Additional features, like Auto-Skin Flash and Multi-Criteria Optimization, streamline planning processes and integrate seamlessly with Varian’s Eclipse treatment planning system.

For clinicians, these improvements mean fewer treatment arcs may be required, potentially reducing overall session times and improving patient throughput.

Varian’s RapidArc Dynamic solution is currently available as an optional feature for the latest version of the Eclipse treatment planning software, paired with the TrueBeam 4.1 radiotherapy platform.
