Trinity Health in Michigan has completed its acquisition of MercyOne in Iowa.
Trinity Health, in Livonia, Michigan, has completed its acquisition of MercyOne Health System, in Iowa.
One of the largest not-for-profit Catholic health systems in the U.S., Trinity co-founded MercyOne in 1998 with Catholic Health Initiatives, now CommonSpirits Health, another not-for-profit Catholic provider in Chicago. It bought out the latter’s ownership stake in the Midwest healthcare system, acquiring all of its facilities and assets.
The organizations
announced the deal back in April, saying at the time that having a sole parent would be best for MercyOne. They determined that Trinity would be best suited, providing MercyOne with unified strategies and operations, including one set of system services, to give its patients a more convenient and consistent care experience.
“With MercyOne now fully part of Trinity Health, we are a stronger and more unified system that will strengthen MercyOne’s ability to serve our patients, colleagues and communities,” said Mike Slubowski, president and chief executive officer of Trinity, in a statement.
Based in Central Iowa, MercyOne serves more than 3.3 million patients annually at its 16 medical centers, 27 affiliate organizations and more than 420 care sites. It employs more than 20,000, including 2,000 doctors and providers.
It will transition to Trinity’s common platforms, including a single EHR system to allow its patients to more easily manage care across services and facilities.
Spanning 25 states, Trinity employs 115,000 individuals and nearly 26,000 physicians and clinicians, and has 88 hospitals, 131 continuing care locations, the second largest PACE program in the country, 125 urgent care locations and many other health and well-being services.
Among the assets that it has acquired from MercyOne are its home care, hospice and infusion services. MercyOne will retain its name and brand.

Financial terms were not disclosed.
